The boom in computer graphics gave graphic designers – and not only them – tools which they could recently only have dreamed of. As a result, almost anyone with access to a computer and a home printer can produce designs or even printed materials. On the one hand, this can be seen positively as the democratisation of the publishing process. On the other hand, it has led to the opinion that graphic design can be done literally by anyone, leading to a fall in professionalism.
Before computers became so commonly used, graphic designers had a much poorer choice of options and tools than today. However, it would be a great mistake to say that their output was of lesser quality. This can be seen in the samples of historical posters and invitations by ÚĽUV which we will describe in this article.
