The way in which craft skills in Slovakia are passed on has changed radically over the last hundred years. The system of heritage within the family or local environment was interrupted mainly by the state ban on private enterprise dating from the 1950s. However, after 1945 a model of care for traditional crafts and home production developed in parallel in the Centre for Folk Art Production (ÚĽUV) and is still functional today. After 1989, the institution shifted its focus from supporting production towards spreading awareness of this sphere of our culture in the direction of the public. In the area of education, this is carried out via the ÚĽUV School of Crafts, which celebrated in 2024 its 25th anniversary with its inclusion on the UNESCO Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for intangible cultural heritage.
