His works are characterized by the use of uncolored straw in yellow-brown tones. Toning is created by ironing the straw, depending on its quality. To create a specific atmosphere, he reaches for colored papers or fabrics.
“At the beginning is a grain of rye that needs to be sown,” he says affectionately to every enthusiast. “Processing the material into a form that can be used for creation is a tedious process that discourages most people. However, if one perseveres, the reward in the form of working on an artwork is beautiful.”
In 2019, Štefan Rutzký was awarded the title of master of folk art production for his work.
He comes from a carpenter family. Both his grandfather and father were trained as carpenters, and as the first ones in Michalovce, they had machines in the workshop. However, the development of the family business after the Second World War was halted...
