Tomáš Mikolaj

Eduard Gregor lost a hand in the First World War. Unlike some others, he accepted his lot with humility. He joined a local association in Tajov (Banská Bystrica district), and although he only had his left hand, he helped around the house and in the fields. The amount of work available at that time in villages, however, convinced him that this path would not lead to a fulfilling life. So in the evenings, he began to devote himself to acquiring wood-carving skills. He gradually succumbed to the wood-carving art, and by visiting shepherds’ huts, he learnt these skills from old head shepherds. And so wood-carving soon became his livelihood – he was a craftsman in the true sense of the word – and helped him fully become integrated into society.
