He was born in 1939 in the village of Bodorová, district of Turčianské Teplice. After the war, his family was relocated to the village of Horná Štubňa in 1949, district of Turčianské Teplice. Jaroslav Cicko worked there as a machinist for 42 years; he still lives there in his own house with a garden. He started wood carving at the age of forty and actually by chance, when he accidentally broke a porcelain figurine belonging to his wife and hastily exclaimed: “I can make such a thing too!” The beginnings were not easy, Jaroslav Cicko had to work his way up to the appropriate tools on his own, as well as discover for himself which types of wood are most suitable for carving. He has held many solo exhibitions at home and abroad. He mainly creates wooden, but also stone sculptures. With stone sculptures, he lets himself be inspired by the original shape of the stone, in which he only emphasizes the motif that is depicted within it or that the artist sees in it himself. Cicko fills the garden of his house with these stone sculptures; there is great interest in his work both among neighbors and among the professional public.
