He makes bagpipes. His passion for this traditional musical instrument dates back to his student years when he encountered it during a job in Scotland. Upon returning to Slovakia, he explored the history and technology of bagpipe making, eventually succeeding in crafting them after many experiments. He continues to actively craft and play them – whether as a soloist or as a member of various musical groups. He has been actively making them since 1998. There are around 600 types of bagpipes in the world, but in Slovakia, where their history dates back to the 9th century, about 5 types have been preserved. Slovak bagpipes have one melodic and one accompanying, so-called drone pipe. The tones in both are created by the flow of air pushed out from the bag – an air reservoir – through the reeds with simple striking plates of a clarinet type. Juraj Dufek crafts Slovak and foreign bagpipes, including historical bagpipes – shawms, musettes, schackpipes, as well as shawms, baglets, drcek, special bagpipes.
