Ceramics is one of the few branches of visual culture which has been connecting craft, art and design for centuries. However, the technology of 3D printing only joined this group of three a few years ago. Over the last decade, the public has been slowly but surely becoming aware of 3D printing, mainly in relation to art and design. Olivier van Herpt is a recent graduate of industrial design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, Holland, but his ceramic works have already been exhibited in leading galleries all around the world. This is not only because his vases and utensils have delicate shapes, but mainly because they were made using the exceptional technology of ceramics and porcelain 3D printing.
