Tradition and modern design

Andrea Ďurianová, Veronika Kotradyová

In the current digital era, we need to justify and defend the need to preserve traditional craft and find new places to apply it. The American sociologist Richard Sennet criticises the contemporary social tendency to recognise new trends as if they had originated only from an idea of genius. Against this he highlights the principle of craft, its basis in tradition, links to previous knowledge and the slow development which proper, honest work requires. The ideas of respect for tradition, using knowledge from the past, as well as its gradual development and transformation accompany several historic tendencies associated with folk culture.
