When waste becomes a treasure

When waste becomes a treasure

Martina Bizovská

Monika Glovaťáková originates from Oravská Polhora (Námestovo district) and has had a close relationship with nature, farm work and traditional crafts since childhood. During her last maternity leave, she noticed the unused potential of sheepswool, which she had considered previously as waste. Fascinated by this material, she gradually learnt from the older generation how to process it and began to spin, card and felt wool. She attended a course by the citizens’ association “Naša vlna” [Our Wool] which helped her develop her craft work. Her products such as slippers, hats, gloves and handbags reflect her inspiration in nature and combine traditional approaches with modern elements. She believes that preserving craft is important not only for the next generations, but also for the craftsperson’s own personal development. Although her cooperation with ÚĽUV is quite new, it is bringing her new opportunities and enables her to develop her craft skills.
