Contemporary Slovak jewellery artists

Contemporary Slovak jewellery artists

Dana Tomečková

A thought-provoking inquiry took place, in which distinguished Slovak jewellery artists, both women and men, discussed terms that could, at times, seem contradictory but that, in fact, could well be to the point, and perhaps more than one would feel. The artists answered our questions in relation to what constitutes jewellery, whether it is important to have a concept, an idea, whether jewellery should be utilitarian, whether it should be aesthetically pleasing, and so on. The following personalities participated in our inquiry: Karol Weisslechner – a painter and academician, the head of Studio S + M + L_XL – Metal and Jewel at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (VŠVU), Andrea Ďurianová – a jewellery artist and a free-lance designer who produces jewellery as commissions and is active in the field of museology, Jana Machatová – a jewellery artist and a free-lance artist, Kristýna Španihelová – a jewellery artist and a graduate of Studio S + M + L_XL – Metal and Jewel, at present an Assistant at the Department of Applied Art of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (VŠVU), Veronika Uherecká – a jewellery artist, and Ľubomír Déči – a founding member of the Guild of Goldsmiths and Jewellers of Slovakia, and a co-founding member of the Private School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava, specialising in metals.
