In connection with folk wear, ÚĽUV played an exceptionally meritorious role between the 1950’s and the end of the 1980’s. It was the initiator of a long-term folk wear research programme the aim of which was to keep the traditional values. As a result, there is now a large documentation material of folk wear in Slovakia (to a large extent also digitised). At that time the production of folk costumes was just starting, based on documented models, mainly commissioned by folklore ensembles, theatre and film. Therefore, it was not a coincidence that it was just in ÚĽUV that the effort appeared to enhance the folk costume production by a more up to date form of clothes design, i.e., production of contemporary clothing by creating models inspired by folk wear. The first contribution on this topic, in a series to be continued, is focusing on folk costumes documentation and production, as well as ÚĽUV’s fashionable clothes production in the 1950’s and the 1960’s .
