She started baking gingerbread cookies for her family at Christmas. Probably a unique recipe inherited from her grandmother in Markušovce, who inherited it from her native village of Dobšiná, turned her gingerbread cookies into a famous delicacy among friends. That’s why, in 2003, after the Girgoškos moved from Spiš to Nové Zámky, they were not far from starting a professional production of gingerbread cookies. Soon, orders started pouring in, prompting her husband Peter Girgoško to leave his job and join her in production.
Her husband is a professional, with a degree in catering, so the business took off well. For a while, they ran a small shop in Nové Zámky, but as larger orders from companies came in, they closed the shop and focused only on custom production. Gradually, they started participating in fairs and exhibitions. Currently, they have moved away from large orders, producing on a smaller scale and selling everything at craft fairs and folk festivals during the summer, while dedicating their winter to other work abroad.
The aforementioned gingerbread recipe draws people to them, often returning because they believe their gingerbread cookies are the best tasting. This gives them strength for further production. During the workweek, they focus on baking and decorating, while selling at fairs on weekends. Jana Girgošková, in the marital production tandem, is the one who decorates the gingerbread cookies. She finds inspiration particularly in bobbin lace, but also uses other motifs from traditional folk ornamentation, such as hearts. She does not copy the ornaments exactly, but rather lets her imagination take over. Her decorating style is characterized by delicate contours.
