He is dedicated to the attractive traditional technique of decorating eggs with metalwork, a skill that was predominantly maintained by blacksmiths in the past. He learned about the egg metalwork technique, which disappeared in the second half of the last century, in 2000 at the Center for Folk Art Production, where he worked as a lecturer in the carving workshop, having studied at the Vocational School of Furniture Making in Bratislava. Initially, he did not believe that something like a metal-covered egg could be made. However, after seeing historical photographs and reading expert articles on the subject, he was convinced to make a reproduction of an Easter egg made using this technique for the collection of the Center for Folk Art Production. He already had experience in making metal ornaments, as he had helped his father decorate jewelry boxes in the past.
Since then, he has created over one hundred and fifty eggs decorated with metal elements (as of 2017). In his creations, he draws inspiration from both domestic and foreign historical sources, although in Slovakia such sources are not abundant – five metal-covered eggs are located in the collection of the Gemer-Malohont Museum in Rimavska Sobota, one in the Tekov Museum in Levice, and one in the East Slovak Museum in Kosice. The preserved motifs applied to the metal-covered eggs were taken from the blacksmithing environment (hammer, tongs, file, horseshoe), but they also featured the years of creation of the eggs, crosses, and botanical motifs. Miroslav Homola also adopted this range of decoration.
He uses chicken eggs filled with burnt – moisture removed – sand as his material. On this base, nails and rivets, which hold the decorative elements securely, are well attached. Cut-out pre-drawn decorative elements of various thicknesses from copper, steel, bronze, and brass sheet metal are shaped, surface-treated by hammering or polishing, holes are drilled for nails or rivets, and they are individually shaped by hand on each egg. The top of the eggs is adorned with a spearhead or cross made of sheet metal, and a horseshoe is attached to the bottom as a base, which he cold-forges from thick wire. He dedicates himself to this craft as a hobby, particularly in the winter season.
