Siblings had only brothers, so he knew Easter eggs at home sooner than as an Easter reward, not as a decoration item. It was not until much later, in 1998, at the Nová Baňa exhibition of egg decorators from the surroundings of Prievidza, that he became interested in the Madeira technique, which he had not had the opportunity to see before. The lady who decorated eggs with this technique revealed to him her insights not only on perforating eggs but also on making his own wax. He bought two eggs from her and started experimenting to see if he could do something similar himself. There was not much literature available at that time, except for a few small pieces in the Dorka magazine, so it took him a year until he was somewhat satisfied with his work. His work was subsequently greatly facilitated by the arrival of a hobby grinding tool on the market.
His main problem was finding eggs with white shells. In the end, he solved this by buying white hens to meet his needs. To make the shell stronger, he adds empty snail shells to their feed. Initially, his wife was unhappy that they only blow out the eggs in the family, but when he learned to separate the egg white from the yolk inside the egg, the problem was solved. He blows out through a single hole, which can be placed anywhere to fit better into the pattern, using a balloon for inflating balloons and a bent injection needle.
He finds inspiration for patterns in folk embroidery, especially from the Trnava region. As Madeira is mostly white, the majority of his eggs are also white – perhaps because white goes well with any interior. If he decides on a color, he goes for green, yellow, or red, as most of the patterns have a plant theme. However, he also draws inspiration from other things he sees – as he himself says, it’s enough to look closer and even a small detail can be amazing.
After blowing out the egg white, he rinses the polished shell in water and lets it dry completely. He draws the pattern on the egg with a soft pencil on equally divided surfaces. He uses the aforementioned hobby grinder with various attachments for perforating.
In 2007, he decided to showcase his eggs at the ÚĽUV (Ústredie ľudovej umeleckej výroby) where the artist Janka Menkynová immediately suggested collaboration. He creates his own patterns, respecting ÚĽUV’s wish to decorate eggs in white. He shares his experiences in primary schools, art schools, creative workshops, at exhibition vernissages, whether authorial or nationwide. He is most active in the senior club in Nová Baňa, where he has been teaching egg decoration courses for a long time. His greatest reward is when someone shows interest to the extent that they start making eggs themselves.
Throughout his active creative career, he has tried various techniques, but he remains faithful to perforated eggs, where he enjoys coming up with new decorating techniques (such as stained glass, inlay, and the like).
His active interest in egg decoration fills most of his retirement time alongside taking care of his garden.
