They are characterized by sculptures placed on angular pedestals, from which the overall character of the figure evolves. Angular shapes emerge from the pedestal, narrowing to form a female torso or a male belt. The male figures are indicated by a coat over the shoulders, boots, while the female figures bear the distinctive character of traditional attire. The author places the figures in a setting or assigns them tools, instruments, and objects that enhance their character. The profile head is minimally articulated. Prominent convex cheeks and a triangular nose give the face its basic expression. The eyes are only hinted at. The oval shape of the head complements the author’s overall perception and portrayal of the world through these figures. The sculptor depicts the statues using techniques that reflect his natural style, utilizing the possibilities offered by the material. The surface of the sculptures is very smooth, perfectly crafted. The processing technique is visible in the edges of individual surfaces. Gregor Malec draws inspiration for his free sculptures from the environment of his childhood village – hemp processing, spinning, washing, and more. Common themes include figures inspired by the traditional attire of the Trenčín region, simplified into ornamental symbols. He highlights specific parts of the attire, especially the aprons in female figures, richly decorated with pleats, skirts, and sleeves adorned with simple decorative elements. For male figures, he respects the typical Trenčín embroidery on woolen trousers and shirts, subtly suggested. He focuses on head coverings – hats for men, bonnets for women, distinguished by small decorative nuances. Detailed and descriptive depictions dominate his works, utilizing traditional embroidery to cover some technical imperfections. A considerable part of Malec’s works consists of reliefs, which, unlike his solo sculptures, depict a certain epic narrative. The natural color of the wood is usually retained for the sculptures and reliefs. The surface of his works is meticulously processed, showcasing his precise approach to craftsmanship. He respects the characteristics of the wood and utilizes the possibilities offered by this material. Gregor Malec’s simple artistic style and choice of subjects reflect a tradition that aligns with folk figurative art.
