Thanks to Viliam Miklaš from Nitrianske Sučany, he got into making straw and hazelnut basketry after his products caught his attention at an exhibition commemorating the first written mention of their village in 1999. He was praised and invited to come learn from him, as he needed to pass on his knowledge. Right after retiring, he started following him along with Ladislav Caňa, Miklaš’s brother-in-law, slowly learning while helping. Initially, he also made baskets from planed hazelnut branches with plywood bottoms, but the material preparation was demanding, so he abandoned them. However, he remained loyal to making baskets woven with straw twigs and initially split hazelnuts using a planer, now a pedig, which seems more suitable for stabilizing the basket. For a few years, he even grew straw himself, but it wasn’t as good quality as that from other growers, so he sourced materials from them. His wife, an active member of the local folklore group, helps him process the materials. Together with friends from Nitrianske Sučany, especially with instrument maker Dušan Hanes, he often visited craft fairs in the region and beyond (Trenčianske Teplice, Topoľčany, Prievidza, Bojnice, Rajecké Teplice, Zuberec). However, in recent years, he has been demotivated as he feels strong competition from wholesalers pushing down the prices of basketry products too much. Consumers often succumb to this trend as well, ignoring the quality and origin of the product, focusing mainly on the price. Therefore, the best-selling items for him are small wooden children’s whistles, which he also started producing and offering at fairs. Preserving the legacy of his ancestors motivates his work. In the past, many people in Nitrianske Sučany wove baskets, as their use in the economy was diverse and often served as measures (for flour, grain, etc.). As the saying goes, a household had to have ošítky for both the mistress and the poultry – at least six for bread rising. Currently, there are no successors, but Ladislav Mokrý is willing to share his basketry experiences.
