The project Modrotlač Matej Rabada was created based on self-study of the technology of indigo dyeing and successful practical dyeing trials that took place in the years 2012-2013. The main goal of the project was the revival and development of indigo dyeing, enriching this technique with contemporary patterns and transforming it into modern forms. Equally important was the presentation of this technique to both professional and lay audiences, mainly through lectures combined with workshops, which I still dedicate myself to.

The provisional basement conditions in which the project originated were replaced in 2015 by a newly built dyeing workshop in Párnica, in the Orava region. The commissioning of the workshop and the first tens of meters of indigo dyeing were part of my own diploma thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, in the Department of Textiles.

Since January 2016, Modrotlač Matej Rabada has been a registered company specializing in the production of indigo-dyed fabrics and, since 2017, also in the production of indigo-dyed products.

In a short period of time, the project’s goals have been fulfilled, from the main one, the revival of indigo dyeing production, to the presentation of indigo dyeing. Several dozen lectures and workshops were organized, as well as exhibitions dedicated to indigo dyeing. It was also possible to establish many collaborations with designers and companies, whose results have promoted indigo dyeing as a technique that remains relevant even today.

In the future, the plan includes expanding the product portfolio with common items, as well as limited editions and, last but not least, new patterns.
