He was a professional basket maker. He was born in 1928 in Valaska Bela, he learned the trade of basket making from 1944 to 1949 in the basket-making cooperative in Modra and Sered. Since April 1961, he worked full-time for the Center for Folk Art Production. His home looked as if it was built in an artificial willow grove, entirely covered with bundles of rods. The hunting association in Ostrovska Nova Ves near Uherske Hradiste and the Unified Farming Cooperative in Jelsove supplied him with the rods. He often prepared the raw material himself on the spot of cultivation and then transported it home by freight. He preferred to use five varieties of bred willows – American, hemp, empress, goldenwillow, and lemon willow. In the 1970s, during the peak of basket making at the Center for Folk Art Production, he produced many types of baskets for the domestic and foreign markets: for laundry, children’s toys, firewood baskets, fruit picking baskets, shopping baskets, travel baskets, baskets with two lids (so-called double lids), baskets for carrying and selling fruit, trays, women’s handbags, elongated single-hand godparent baskets, plate baskets. He made baskets from peeled, soaked, or boiled rods, which he could also combine, like solid and split rods. He used a solution of hydrochloric acid to bleach the products made from soaked rods. The quality of weaving and materials used were the criteria to judge his own products. Besides the basic basket-making tools, he considered only skill, diligence, and sensitivity important. He was both a master and a worker. After years of practice, he had the shapes of baskets in his mind’s eye, making them almost from memory. And they grew under his hands like mushrooms after the rain; his work was a game to him. He obtained a certificate of qualification as a master of folk art production in the field of rod production in 1980.
