A basketry instructor who frequently attends basketry events and courses abroad is particularly drawn to France and its traditional method of weaving willow baskets using the openwork technique. She applied for a three-week Erasmus+ stay with the renowned basket maker François Desplanche, whom she had previously met as an instructor at courses in England.
The goal of her stay was to learn the basket-weaving technique the French call travail à jour (openwork weaving). This method is traditionally used to create open baskets of various shapes (round, oval, square), which feature a specific way of arranging and securing the upright rods (the stakes). During the three-week stay, E. Rudíková made a total of fifteen products, twelve of them using the openwork technique.
“For me, it was a basketry fairy tale. One does not experience things like this every day. We worked on basketry every single moment…” – said Erika Rudíková.
Erika Rudíková shared her knowledge through two courses prepared for the public at the ÚĽUV Regional Craft Centre in Košice.
