A wicker odyssey

A wicker odyssey

Tomáš Mikolaj

A report from a visit to the Goral village of Lacková in the Stará Ľubovňa district will take us to the past, when, reportedly, baskets were being made in every house there. Since the 1950’s the tradition of local basket making production in Lacková started dwindling but had survived with the local people and continues up to day. An evidence of this is the former fruitful cooperation between some producers and the Centre for Folk Art Production (ÚĽUV), as well as the fact that the basket making know how is well known to almost every inhabitant of the village even today. The village mayor Marek Gallík, son of the basket maker Alojz Gallík, has launched an exhibition of the history of basket making in Lacková in the local community centre, accompanied by practical courses of wickerwork for the schools in the region and the general public. Thus the tradition in Lacková can continue and is still alive. Maybe, if also the younger generation got more interested in it, not only as a hobby or an attraction for the tourists, it could contribute to their livelihood, just as it once did to their ancestors.
