In Poland, decorated eggs are called pisanki. The name derives mainly from a beeswax technique. The most popular traditional techniques for decorating Easter eggs in Poland are batik, etching and decoration by various materials with the help of glue. At the turn of the 19th and 20th century, it was common knowledge in folk culture in Poland, too, that Easter eggs were generally thought to have magical powers. The folks believed in their life-giving and goodwill-giving powers, especially if they were consecrated. They were used as symbols of protection. All year round, the folks used to generally keep several consecrated Easter eggs in the house, usually placed behind a picture. Even today, decorating of Easter eggs is one of the most vital and popular activities within folk art. In general, its roots can be found in a highly widespread Easter egg decoration custom, and in a close link between rich traditions practiced during the Easter.
