Horn has always been one of the materials used in Slovakia for folk art. Horn production was almost exclusively concentrated in eastern Slovakia, in particular in its south-eastern part, where the breeding of long-horned draught cattle was widespread. The production range mainly consisted of kitchen and portable salt cellars, drinking horns, shepherd’s horns, whetstone pouches and hair pins. Comb-makers also processed horn, although they focused on a different type of production. In fact, comb-making was the craft which replaced the home-based horn craft after its disappearance in the 1950s.
