Shape limits and challenges in the design of urban furniture

Miroslav Zelinský

The range of meanings of the phrase “urban furniture” has become significantly wider with the increasing interest in design, and primarily with the interest of self-governing bodies in attractive public spaces. It no longer means benches in parks, public bins or public transport stops. The functionality of urban furniture has considerably expanded, and we could almost talk about public furniture. In fact, today it is being put into place in rural areas, too, making parts of our villages more liveable than they were a decade ago. We should point out how limits are being pushed back in terms of their variety of shapes and functions. However, the true limits and challenges for today lie somewhere else: in the environmental factor of the design of public spaces.
