The variety of forms of cakes and bakery products in the folk tradition

Rastislava Stoličná

Cakes and various types of bakery products were a part of traditional Slovak cooking. They were mainly made out of yeast dough but, unlike bread, used finer white flour and were sweet. The Slavonic word for cake, koláč, originally applied to round baked goods. In folk faith, the circle represented the Sun’s life-giving power, as well as the passing of life from birth to death.

Cakes and fine baked goods, however, were not common food in the past. They were prepared in the family environment during the celebration of calendar or family events. During the course of the year, they were mainly baked at Christmas, Carnival, Easter and for feast-days.
