When the mouth is silent and hands talk

When the mouth is silent and hands talk

Igor Toder from Michalovce is continuing the family tradition of trough-making production. He learnt woodworking as a child from his father Jozef Kanáloš senior, master of folk art production, who kept up the family tradition of one of the most archaic techniques of woodworking: hollowing out with an axe. Although he hollowed out his first spoon at the age of nine, his relationship to wood was forced at first. While his schoolmates played, he hollowed out spoons, pipes and hair ornaments. It was only later that woodworking became his hobby and employment. Today he produces kitchen bowls, plates, spoons, bowls, trays, ladles and dipping cups. He was awarded the title of master of hollowed-out wood production at the age of 36 in 2001. Since them, he has attended many fairs and markets with his wife Božena Toderová.
