Woodcutting and its colourful life in pictures

Oľga Danglová

Woodcutting is one of the oldest printmaking techniques; nevertheless, it has not worn thin as a medium over the years. In its minimalistic simple black lines standing out against a white background, it has lost nothing of its artistic attraction. The basis of woodcutting is transferring a pattern or picture by downwards pressure using a block proof carved from a piece of smoothed wood cut lengthwise, according to the growth rings of deciduous trees. For this reason, the pattern of the wood can sometimes be seen on a woodcut print.
