The design of practical items, particularly in pre-industrial times, was not defined only by the skill and creativity of many generations of craftspeople, but also by the climatic conditions and availability of materials. Various accidents, coincidences and the appearance of exceptional people also played a role. This is also the story behind what is probably one of the most iconic pieces of Scottish folk furniture.
