Ján Sakala – Sculptures emphasized by colour

Martin Mešša

Woodcarver and former folk dancer Ján Sakala was awarded the master of folk art production title in 2010. He makes very specific sculptures. They look like they come from a single piece of wood. The author uses only limited methods of visual display and fully respects the motif. And, he uses strong power of colours. Sculptures are covered with glaze, or some parts of a sculpture are painted. Or, he adds patina emphasizing a gesture, a part of body or a drapery. Sakala does not imitate sculptures made by professional sculptors or traditional folk sculptures. However, his works remind of a close bond he has with traditional folk art.
