A Chair is not a Toy

A Chair is not a Toy

Michal Hanula

In the last school year at the Secondary School of Applied Arts (ŠUV) in Ružomberok where the author of this article has been teaching for several years, the topic of a chair has been included into the education program. Students at the Department of Toys and Decorative Objects have come across this topic before – a stool for kids, often in a shape of a little animal. The result requested was a functional prototype of a chair made for the purpose of sitting. The topic was divided into two possible solutions: one was a type for industrial production and the other one was a freestyle design or an artdesign.

Some of the students recycled or upcycled used chairs. Others created a completely new model, beginning with cutting the material all the way through creating the final product suitable for sitting.
