A stool had been the only piece of furniture for sitting till the end of the 18th century and is considered the oldest type of sitting furniture in Slovakia. It´s only at the beginning of the 20th century when chairs – furniture for sitting with a chair back – have become a common part of household interiors, along with new types of stools and benches. They were mostly made of hard wood. We know two types of chairs – one with a self-supporting construction and a plank chair back, another one with a frame construction usually with straight and square legs. In both these types the chair backs have been the main space for decorative variability as various wood carving techniques used to be applied when working with these areas.
