New Masters: Born for Wool and Needles

New Masters: Born for Wool and Needles

Tomáš Mikolaj

Dagmar Kocianová has been attracted to manual crafts since childhood. She could knit before she could write. She wanted to study at a school of applied arts, but her teachers persuaded her that she would find it difficult to find a job in life as an artist, so they sent her to a business school. After having stopped working as a secretary for health reasons, when considering her future career her excellent knowledge of knitting came in useful. Following a meeting with the artist from the Centre for Folk Art Production (ÚĽUV) Klára Brunovská, to whom she showed her knitting work, she received an offer in 1985 to work full-time for ÚĽUV as a producer. She worked with precision, and gradually produced prototypes of products following the artist’s new designs. However, she also continued her serial production, keeping her craft skills alive. She continues to work with ÚĽUV even today. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Master of Folk Art Production for her work.
