On the History of Leather Production

Libuša Jaďuďová

Leather production was widespread through Slovakia, existing as a craft as well as home-based production. It became specialised in individual regions depending on the population’s needs. Traditional products included krpce folk shoes, belts and bags. Less widespread types of leather products were tobacco pouches, cuffs and straps for fastening clothing and knife pouches. Cow leather was used the most; small items were made of fine sheep, goat or lamb leather. Folk art production has preserved this production by making copies (for example for the needs of folk groups), as well as by transferring elements of traditional work and techniques onto contemporary products.
