New masters: Enthralled by Brezová lace in traditional clothing

Mária Mizeráková

Marie Michalicová only began to make bobbin lace when she retired, and started on her first visit to the Brezová Lace Knitting Club in Brezová pod Bradlom (Myjava district). That was seventeen years ago. Before then, however, she had seen a member of the club, Hedviga Kátlovská, making lace at a fair and had said to herself: ,,one day I would like to be able to do that”. Even though she had lived in Brezová pod Bradlom for quite a time, it was only then that she became enthralled by the traditional festive clothing which the lace-maker was wearing, in particular the bobbin lace and how it is made. She started lace-making like most course attendees. First she made the basic stitches, then combined them and applied them to simple regional lace, or more modern ,,pictures”. In time, she also mastered fine tulle bobbin lace which is characteristic of the Myjava hills region. She has remained faithful to this lace made using multiple pairs of bobbins. She draws traditional patterns on papier which is then used as a pattern to follow. Her desire is for tulle lace to be preserved for further generations.
