Why is it that linen clothing that had been worn for centuries was gradually replaced with other fabrics? Today, our shops offer mostly cotton clothing or still cheaper products from synthetic fibres. However, linen clothing articles last longer and have excellent thermal insulation properties. Moreover, the longer you wear them, the lighter they become in colour. In our lands and culture, flax was a traditional crop to be grown for its fibre. The population living in villages and countryside learned how to produce either coarse, thick threads or fine threads. The latter were used for weaving fine, smooth cloth from which clothing articles worn direct on the body would have been sewn. The former were intended for more stretched textiles that were supposed to be stronger and were used in households or for work.
