Cornhusk in the area of Galanta

Izabela Danterová

Corn leaves are the youngest wickerwork material in folk basket making. Its use for making or completing objects of everyday use has been applied in rural areas since the beginning of the 20th century, but the organized production of objects from corn leaves in the form of home-made products has been developed only later in the second half of the 20th century. Corn leaves started to be used frequently for weaving parts of furniture, for making mats and bags, bowls and later dolls. In the Museum of National History in Galanta a rich collection of corn leaf objects are presented in an effort to research and document this craft thoroughly in the Galanta region.
