The lasting heritage of Vajnory ornamental painting

Viera Slezáková

Vajnory (today a city district of Bratislava) is one of the areas of western Slovakia where the painted decoration of fireplaces, houses or furniture was widespread. We can describe this region’s painted fireplaces as a specifically national phenomenon. Material, spiritual and social reasons lay behind the creations of these paintings painted straight on the wall. An important factor in the development of this painting was the space of the kitchen itself, where from the mid-19th century, an open fire was only used for cooking in the summer, with cooking taking place in the back room in the winter. When the kitchen stopped being used for cooking, an empty space was left, idea for decorating.
