Extinct Pottery Making In Halič

Extinct Pottery Making In Halič

Dita Nociarová

The municipality of Halič was one of the nearly 40 centres of ceramic production in the southern part of central Slovakia at the beginning of the 20th century. Pottery making in Halič died out at the beginning of the 1960s. Almost all the production from Halič pottery was of practical objects, mass-produced for everyday use. Halič pottery makers created all their pottery manually on the wheel. A common feature of Halič clay is its warm earth-like colour. Plant decoration is stylish on Halič pottery; it does not excel with preciseness but with painting skills expressed by strokes, speed, a sense of measure, and the absence of interest in useless artistry. As a result of this simplicity it looks very modern and even today can serve as a source of inspiration for current producers and artists.
