Štiavnica inspirations of Alexander Ladziansky

Mária Čelková

The Banská Štiavnica region has been known for its rich woodcraft tradition since the Middle Ages. Alexander Ladziansky, the current author, took this as the basis for his creations. Its first wood crafting trials took place between 1976 and 1980. He draws topics from folk as well as mining themes. In the mid 1980s he started to implement mining sculptures and reliefs. On a commission from the Mining Museum in Nature in Banská Štiavnica, since 1990 he has been creating an original mine for an underground exhibition – wooden sculptures of miner’s demons in action . Over the past ten years he has created dozens of mining sculptures. Other exterior sculptures are in the park of a manor house in near-by St Anton and in the area of the amphitheatre in Východná.
