It is an unusual combination to join the traditional Norwegian and traditional Slovak folk costume and the contemporary clothing design. It was an interesting and varied collection which compared clothes of two regions of Europe – Norway and Slovakia.
Norsk Institutt for Bunad og Folkedrakt, a company organising the production and distribution of bunads, selected ten Norwegian bunads. It is a formal folk costume which is used for representative purposes home and abroad. Slovak collection of fifteen folk costumes was borrowed from the Museum of folk art production of the ÚĽUV. The museum stores some very rare folk costumes from the late 19th century. Contemporary clothing design is a sphere in which the use of folk production inspiration is very attractive. The collection exhibited is the work of students or graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Designers use the art from past in various ways – from a visual bond to a concept of hidden symbols. Similarities of the Norwegian and Slovak attitudes to traditions are embodied in the works students made (blueprint designs) as part of the project One space – many ways which was realised by the AFAD´s textile design studio and Telemark University College in Rauland in 2010.
