From history of gubárstvo (weaving and processing of woollen fabrics) in Klenovec

An investigation of weaving and processing woollen fabrics, Gubárstvo in Klenovec, was carried out during 2016, with the aim to gather, for ÚĽUV, as much information as possible about history, terminology and current producers in the region. Till 2006, there were two producers in Klenovec – Ján Fotta and Jarmila Hrušková, the latter stopping her production in 2006 as companies in the region, processing wool, had closed down, and small producers had not been properly functioning either. On top of that, keeping sheep decreased. In 2008, the village of Klenovec initiated the birth of the House of Crafts. It was to operate under the auspices of a social community association launched in the same year. In the House of Crafts, the unemployed could be trained in weaving rugs and clothing articles called guba. The social community association, however, was not as successful as expected and, as a result, gubárstvo in Klenovec is likely to disappear altogether. Unfortunately, the last master of this craft, Ján Fotta, boasting rich experience in the field, has no followers, the same being true of gubárstvo.
