The craft of bobbin lace making captivated this native of Valaska Dubova in the 1970s during a trip to Spania Dolina, where local women were still actively engaged in bobbin lace making at that time. Her daily reading material became the book about Elena Holeczyova by Pavel Michalides.

A turning point for her was the year 1980 when she suffered a stroke, after which she stayed at home on a disability pension. She took a course in bobbin lace making and has been fully dedicated to it ever since. As she herself says, at the beginning she did not know relaxation, rather she mastered what she had set out to do. She learned by purchasing various lace patterns on clothing items at exhibitions and then deconstructing them at home, thus uncovering the technique of lace making. She has been actively producing since 2000.

In the mid-90s, she began teaching lace making at courses and in 1996 she founded the bobbin lace club at Turcianske Osvetove Stredisko in Martin. Right from the start, it had 24 members and is still active today. Together with the club members and employees of SNM in Martin, she contributed to documenting the Liptov bobbin lace, which she published in 2013 in the book “Secrets of Liptov Bobbin Lace” with detailed drawings of 34 patterns, mainly originating from Liptovsky Sliač and Liptovska Kokava. Today, every member of the Martin club masters the technique of making Liptov bonnets.

Maria Cobrdova makes sashes, doilies, tablecloths, and also engages in lace making of paintings, which she creates without a preliminary sketch, only working from a blueprint. The driving force behind her work is that she feels free while lace making – no one can tell her what to do, only herself.
