One of the most commonly used products made from split hazel trees in the Orava region were double-bottomed bowls with a semicircular base and an ellipsoidal shape. Long lunch baskets were used for carrying containers with cooked food during agricultural work. Cradles as long as 60 cm were used for carrying newborns. For transporting feed, straw, hay, and cut grass, large square baskets were used, while smaller ones were used for potatoes. Production of these items continued in the region until the beginning of the 21st century, thanks to individuals like Ján Čuporák from Podbiel.
He devoted himself to production from a young age, learning the art of weaving from his grandfather and godfather. He used hazel rods for his production. He personally sourced the material, following tried and tested practices and procedures. He was familiar with areas in the village’s environs with high-quality hazels. The ideal time for cutting them was in November when the leaves fell. He trimmed the wood and stored it horizontally in the yard to prevent it from drying out completely. Hazel wood is not harmed by rain, snow, or mud.
The thickness of hazel rods should not exceed 1.5 – 2 cm. The highest quality hazels grow in sunny locations, making them ideal for splitting. On the other hand, hazels growing on rocky ground, due to poorer growing conditions, are more flexible and suitable for making hoops.
Ján Čuporák preferred steamed hazel rods over raw ones. When raw, the wood tends to splinter during shaving and processing, resulting in an uneven surface that did not meet his quality standards aesthetically. He steamed the hazel in a simple, homemade device at a temperature of 80°C, which is ideal for peeling. Well-steamed hazel peels easily and sands well. He sanded the hazel with a sharp basketmaker’s knife on his knees.
His work was characterized by precise weaving techniques, a sensitive approach to materials, and creativity. He created various shapes of baskets for personal use, but most often on request for locals and customers from afar. As a result, he expanded the traditional range of products to include new types of baskets, adapted in shape for different purposes. His baskets for firewood, mushrooms, umbrella stands, writing desks, computers, and other uses were in high demand.
He had a circle of regular customers, with new ones constantly coming in, sometimes making it difficult to fulfill all orders. Basket weaving was just one of his occupational activities, more of a hobby, but carried out with full professional seriousness.
