Angela Czintelová was born in Levoča, where she spent her entire childhood. Although she does not come from a lace-making family and no one in her family made bobbin lace, she found her way to lace through her neighbor, lace maker Mrs. Sabová, who was her first inspiration. She made traditional Spiš caps for almost the entire Spiš region and reportedly was the last lace maker in Levoča. Later, during her studies of ethnography and folklore at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava, she focused on bobbin lace making. She started to improve her skills in a circle led by her classmate Veronika Géciová-Komorovská. The result of her studies was her thesis “Research of bobbin lace in Spiš”.
After completing her studies at university, she found employment at the Mining Museum in Rožňava. She acquired further necessary knowledge and skills through courses she attended at the Gemer Education Center in Rožňava and in Rejdova. She intensively focused on research of bobbin lace from the Gemer region. She wrote several studies on the topic of Gemer lace making. Personally, she learned from Zuzana Urbanová in Rejdova, who introduced her to lace with original Gemer patterns. She also frequently met with the famous master of folk art production, Žofia Vilímová st., also from Rejdova.
She has been actively involved with bobbin lace making since 1996, not only theoretically but also practically. From 2000, she began to focus on the technique of pre-drawing lace. She collected and recreated templates for a book called “Gemer Bobbin Lace”, which was published in 2002. It contains 13 of the most famous Gemer patterns used in edgings and caps.
Her work mainly focuses on weaving stripe-pattern bobbin lace of the Gemer type. She draws inspiration from various parts of traditional caps and edgings. Individual elements – mostly striped motifs with twists – are selected and arranged into new compositions. She combines various stitches and elements. She uses plain ground, ground with looped edges, chained mesh, leaves, dots, teeth, etc. Her work includes many floral motifs – calyx flowers, branches, palm leaves. Floral motifs are placed in a chain mesh, called “riečička”. Sometimes there is one main floral motif in the composition, while other times side floral motifs complement it. She mainly uses cotton and linen threads. Apart from pictures in wooden frames, she also produces functional textiles in the form of elongated covers. The color scheme includes light natural tones with occasional subtle color accents.
Her portfolio also includes reconstructions of traditional edgings of Gemer bobbin lace on ceremonial textiles. An example is the project “From cradle to grave” in which she focused on reconstructing a corner sheet (in the years 2019 – 2020). The reconstruction includes traditional Gemer bobbin lace, which formed tooth-shaped edges on ceremonial textiles, and traditional Gemer cutout embroidery. The aim of the project was to preserve traditional technological procedures of production and decoration of corner sheets with embroidery and bobbin lace (she collaborated with Jarmila Kalmanová on the embroidery motif of stylized roosters).
Since 2000, she has been leading the Bobbin Lace Club at the Gemer Education Center in Rožňava. She strives to promote Gemer lace, emphasizing the preservation of original patterns and techniques. She actively participates in domestic and international exhibitions, folklore events, and festivals (Gemer Folklore Festival, International Lace Festival in Krakow, national lace exhibitions, presentation of Gemer bobbin lace in Moscow, “We are still here” in Košice, Treasures of Felvidék, and more).
In the past, she collaborated several times with the Center for Folk Art Production. In 2019, she gave a lecture at the Regional Crafts Center in Banská Bystrica on the topic “Gemer Bobbin Lace”. Her professional articles have also been published in the magazine RUD (1/2006, 3/2006, and 4/2006). She is also the author of several publications: “Gemer Bobbin Cap” (Obzor Gemera, 1998), “Following Lace-maker Z. Vilímová from Rejdová” (Museum News, 1990), “Rejdová – Center of Interest in Bobbin Lace” (Museum News, 1994), “Gemer Bobbin Lace” (Balneological Newsletter Piešťany, 1997), “Regional Specificities of Gemer Bobbin Lace” (Ethnological News, 1998), “Gemer Bobbin Lace – Proceedings of the Gemer-Malohont Museum in Rimavská Sobota” (2007).
