Creator from Bratislava, born in 1929, who produced pumps, whips, pistons, belts, slingshots, buckles, shepherd’s axes, cheese molds, shepherd’s dishes, thus disrupting the then perception of a folk maker tied to the distinctive regions of Slovakia. He lived in Petržalka, during the war in Linz, Austria, where he studied at a gymnasium and learned German excellently. However, he continued to cherish Slovak folk culture and embraced it despite his urban origins. He spent a lot of time in his masonry in Detva, where he also had a workshop, gradually becoming ingrained into the Slovak mountains and nature, on par with rural artists. He acquired his craft knowledge at the Bratislava Electrotechnical Plant, where he worked as a toolmaker for fourteen years. Meanwhile, starting from 1956, he collaborated with the Folk Art Production Center, working full-time from 1965 to 1968. He expertly mastered the production of wood, leather, metal, and iron products. He did not specialize in one type of product, his range of assortment was enormous. He could make a wide six-slat belt as well as a narrow two-slat belt. He made slingshots for belts himself, and when needed for a belt, he also made shepherd’s axes or other items. He knew the nuances in the ornaments used, characteristic symbols, shapes, overall decor of the products, and the production tradition of each region in Slovakia. He produced originals, but also reproduced many products or parts of them (e.g., iron lamp frameworks) as required by the needs of the Folk Art Production Center at that time. As a resident of Bratislava, he was constantly available to the designers of the center, such as V. Kautman and later S. Koreň – “firefighter,” standing in for other folk artists or when a special order was needed from “higher” places (e.g., a belt for F. Castro or an axe for N. Khrushchev). Under the guidance of V. Kautman, he worked from 1968 as a specialist instructor at the newly established design department of the University of Fine Arts in Bratislava. In 1982, he obtained a certification acknowledging his mastery of folk art production in the fields of metal and leatherworking.
