Michal Fratrič is a graduate of the Department of Wood Shaping and Carving at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava. During his studies, he attended Peter Strassner’s studio in Devín, gradually acquiring not only practical but also artistic knowledge. The right authorities and role models during his adolescence left an indelible mark on the young student, laying a solid foundation for his work. Even during his studies, he encountered solitary sculptural objects and seating. He continues to develop this direction in his own work to this day.

Among his unique creations, we find seating in various zoomorphic shapes and forms. By utilizing simple construction principles—joining a seat with four legs—he creates unique and artistically original pieces, often referencing fantastical animal creatures. In his work with wood, he strives to explore more archaic methods of wood joining, such as the so-called self-locking joints, without the use of glue or screws, thus referring to time-tested principles. A sensitive approach to the material itself is also very prominent in his work. With admirable respect, he adapts his designs to the natural characteristics of the wood, but in the final form of the product, he “triumphs” over the material with his artistic expression. He mostly obtains wood from acquaintances with gardens and orchards, primarily using fruit trees like plum, cherry, or pear, though his works from walnut or linden wood are also well known. The trace of the tool is evident and readable on many of his works. He uses “non-motorized” tools (axe, two-handed knife, “spoon” knife, plane, rasp, hand saw) as well as a modern “motorized” tool—a chainsaw. Surfaces bearing the trace of the tool alternate in the final piece with clean, perfectly polished surfaces. For surface finishing, he uses natural oil, which highlights the natural grain of the wood and enhances the beauty of the material. Particularly, the technique of wood burning provides space for interesting structures and contrasts.

In 2018, he participated in the craft-oriented design competition Kruhy na vode. For his wooden bench named “Dvojhlavec” (Double-Headed), he won 3rd place, confirming his ability to respectfully and sensitively transcend the boundaries of traditional production.

In 2021, he was awarded the title Master of Folk Art Production. His work can be seen not only in ÚĽUV stores but also in public spaces through works from symposia he attended. He also collaborates with ÚĽUV as an instructor at Regional Craft Centers.
