His grandfather was a trained basket weaver, employing both people from his own workshop in Hlohovec and prisoners from the Leopoldov prison during the interwar period. He owned several hectares of willow plantations near Hlohovec, from where he sourced materials. Although willow was not nationalized in 1948, cows were allowed to graze in it, leading to the demise of his successful company. Nevertheless, he continued weaving until the end of his life, with his baskets being sold to traders from eastern Slovakia. This family history of basket weaving was passed down to Peter Spáčil, who himself started weaving at a young age and eventually established his own successful basket weaving company in 1990. Despite facing challenges, his firm continues to thrive, specializing in baskets for bakeries and gift shops, using primarily boiled and peeled willow rods in their production.
