Gemer pottery bottle
Gemer pottery bottle
The clay bottle is used for storing liquids, especially water. The narrow neck protects against the entry of warm air and keeps the liquid longer in a cool state. It is made of white clay based on patterns of pottery production from the Gemer region. Hand-turned on a potter’s wheel, then compressed from all four sides. In the part below the narrow neck, it is decorated with a belt ornament, interrupted through a layer of thick reddish-brown clay. Below that is a plastic “chain design,” also known as “finger strings” in a folk style. The name of the ornament is derived from the production process, when the attached clay string is pressed with the tip of a finger at regular intervals. These finger strings, made in this way, serve not only for decoration but also for strengthening the circumference of the container. Glazed inside with transparent glaze, the neck and handle are glazed with green glaze on the outside. The larger part of the container from the outside is without glaze.
