Gemer pottery, large
Gemer pottery, large
Large bulbous pot with handles on both sides. It is made according to traditional patterns of pottery production from the Gemer region. It is hand-turned on a potter’s wheel from white clay. The section below the neck is adorned with painted and attached band decoration. The painted parts are a combination of lines of various thicknesses, made from red-brown clay. The attached decoration – also called chain decoration or finger cords – serves not only for decoration, but also for consolidating the vessel’s circumference. The name of the decoration is derived from the production process, where the attached clay cord is spread out with the tip of a finger at regular intervals. The dominant feature of the pot’s decoration is a thick band of red-brown line, interrupted by a geometric ornament. The interior is glazed with a transparent glaze, while the neck and handles are glazed with a green glaze on the outside. The larger part of the vessel is left unglazed on the outside.
