In his work, he drew upon the tradition of two crafts – blacksmithing and wirework – and connected them with his artistic approach. His creations include classic wrought iron products, a rich assortment of traditional utility-decorative wire artifacts (such as hooks, baskets, trays, pot and ironing boards, bird cages) as well as more creatively designed pieces (candle holders combined with serving bowls, lamps, small table accessories).

All products, however, are rooted in tradition both in shape and weaving technology. They are characterized by rational shapes, clean lines, balanced use of decorative elements, and flawless technological processing. Also characteristic of Štefan Smržík is the combination of wire with wrought iron or sheet metal, utilizing the visual contrast of both materials.

In 2008, he was awarded the title of master of folk art production.
