Wedding pot, Gemer
Wedding pot, Gemer
Large bulging pot with handles on both sides, commonly known as a wedding pot. It is made according to traditional patterns of pottery production from the Gemer region. It is hand-spun on a potter’s wheel from white clay. The area below the neck is decorated with painted and attached ribbon decor. The painted parts combine lines and waves of various thicknesses, made from dark brown and reddish-brown clay. The attached decor – also called chain decor or finger ropes – serves not only for decoration, but also to strengthen the circumference of the vessel. The name of the decor is derived from the production process, where the attached clay rope is expanded at regular intervals with the tip of a finger. The decor of the pot is dominated by a thick strip of brown line, interrupted by a geometric ornament. The inside is glazed with transparent glaze, while the neck and handles are glazed with green glaze from the outside. A larger part of the vessel from the outside is unglazed.
